US Marine 2017 by AnimatedTako US Marine 2017 by AnimatedTako
From my personal-who-knows-when-it'll-ever-come-out-espionage-epic "Off the Grid"

United States Marines as they appear in the story, circa 2017.

Since the end result may be animated, the camo pattern may be dropped, but I chose woodland MARPAT simply because I like it better than the desert one and at present, it's the only truly green uniform left in the US forces.

Gun design is based off the Mk 16 and Mk 17 SCAR. Traditionally Marines are rifleman by doctrine, but I drew a carbine just because it tickles my fancy. They're all tan right now, I figure green versions will come around eventually. At this point, I think mixmatched equipment colors due to supply problems are a trademark of the US soldier 'look', so I thought I'd echo that in the modular components of the weapon.

I went with a hard visor instead of clear plastic mostly because I think the next big advancement in soldier equipment will mostly be advanced optics and an emphasis on awareness. The user would actually be looking at the combined images of several cameras mounted both on the helmet and weapon system for a wider degree of vision than normally possible for the human eye. Not to mention as gun camera technology progresses shooting from behind cover or from the hip will become all too easy.

Yes, I've put too much thought into it. Photoshop cs 2 and intuos 3 as always.

coming from an actual marine, i think youve got the right idea going here but not all the way 100% there. some pointers: the woodland cammies we use are digital paterns, not the old tri-colors you used here. flak jacket isnt too bad. boots need work though--we marines dont tuck our trouser legs into the boots. we use an elastic band to fold the fabric up and under so they are actually on top of the boot. its called blousing your boots. dont ask me why. the reason i bring this up is that you painted the trousers all the way down to the foot.

the kevlar helmet is killing me, it just feels wrong. the optics are a good idea; we usually use black sunglasses as eye protection from shrapnel and such. goggles are only used in place of those or if there are heavy winds, like from a helicopter or dust storm.

the weapon system isnt too bad. the butt stock is weird though. the color should be the same as the rest of the weapon. but youre right, we are foremost all riflemen. the M16A4 and M4A2 are the most common weapons used right now. usually, both have Rifle Combat Optic (RCO) scopes and a PEQ-16 laser designator. this allows us to have a surefire flashlight and laser pointer for day and night fire.

finally, dont forget about comm systems and hydration systems. every marine, by Marine Corps order, must have a hydration system on him at all times. *especially* in country such as Iraq and Afghanistan. usually we wear camelbaks.

just some food for thought. good luck with your

Thanks for the tips, I'll blouse the boots on all of them from here on out. I may hit you up for more tips on corp culture later.
